Bronxville, New York
Renovation Completed in 1996
Description
Siwanoy is a close neighbor to a number of elite, well known clubs in Westchester County like Westchester CC, Wykagyl CC, Winged Foot and Quaker Ridge. Designed in 1913 by Donald Ross, the course at Siwanoy would be the site of the first PGA Championship in 1916. Then, the tournament winner was determined from a match-play event. Jim Barnes won the event at Siwanoy, where Walter Hagen was a semi-finalist.
While working alongside Arthur Hills, one of our more challenging directives was to help the Club locate and build an irrigation storage pond on the property. Before, the Club was purchasing all of their water directly from the city, which was an expensive and unstable proposition for sure. Along with fitting of the new pond into the course on holes #15 and 16, the bunkering and the tees were refurbished. Our work was coordinated with long time superintendent, Dave Mahoney. Dave passed away several years ago unexpectedly. He was an outstanding person with whom to work.
In more recent years, the club retained the services of architect Mike DeVries to execute a more definitive restoration of Ross' original design intent. From what I have seen, the work turned out beautifully.
